An earthquake of 6.3 magnitude has hit the coast of Southern Peru, according to an official report.
Government statistics said that there was no immediate threat of tsunami.
TRT World reports that the Geophysical Institute of Peru on Sunday said the earthquake was centred in the Pacific at a depth of 25 kilometres (16 miles) off the coast of Arequipa department.
According to reports, the government has chosen not to activate the tsunami warning system following a recent earthquake. Peru is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region of high seismic activity that spans the west coast of South America.
The US Geological Survey reported the earthquake’s magnitude as 6.0, with a depth of 19.9 kilometers.
This event is not unusual for Peru, which experiences at least 400 detectable earthquakes annually.
